Choosing your kitchens ideal design
By Second Nature Collection Published: 24/06/2011
If you are a new home owner and thinking of renovating your kitchen, chances are you intend to keep the finished product for a few years to come. It is therefore important that you choose your kitchen design carefully so you don’t have to turn to renovation again if you decide later on that you no longer like it.
Here are some tips on how to achieve a well-designed kitchen that will continue to ooze style for years to come:
Compliment the rest of the house
The kitchen is the hub of a home, where you will spend a great deal of your time preparing food and dining family or guests, therefore it must compliment the rest of the house’s design themes, colours and architectural elements. For example, a traditional country kitchen probably won’t work if the rest of your home is modern.
Find objects you like
If you don’t quite know where to start, picking smaller accessories that you like can provide the foundations on which to develop the rest of your kitchen design. For example, if you want a kitchen with a rustic edge you may want to choose from Second Nature's great collection of wooden worktops. Alternatively, a brightly styled appliance might suggest that a retro kitchen is for you.
Functional considerations
Above all, you kitchen design needs to be functional. For example, a family with children requires an easy-to-clean kitchen without easily damageable/stainable surfaces, or if you prefer to get a take-away in rather than cook a meal there is little point in wasting money on expensive cookers/appliances. The key is to think carefully about how you will be spending your time in your kitchen on a regular basis and to base you kitchen design around that.
Finalising a design
When you finally have a good idea of the style you have in mind, this will make it much easier for when you come to shop for your kitchen. If you are in need of more inspiration, why not browse interior design magazines and websites for similar ideas to your own.
